"What other punishments does Owlis give out besides spankings and death?"
I think now would be a good time to note that Owlis doesn't actually give out, ahem, DEATH. At least, not as an official punishment of Wysdom, certainly. Tho this could happen.
Yeah, so there's about six different official punishments throughout Wysdom. Different Kingdoms have slightly different rules and I have been meaning to talk about this.
Let's get the main one out of the way: Paddling.
Paddling is done by strapping down someone and whacking the bottom with an oversized paddle, between 1 - 30 times. In specific, Sunnyvilla and Sandrun have 3 - 24 (minimum is three whacks, maximum is 24 whacks). Rosaberg and Glacialance have 1 - 30. Luxworth actually has 1 - 12 and a different apparatus. Lavandar, as the capital kingdom, naturally has 1 - 30. Finally, Wyrmhome goes 1 - 24. So anyone convicted of a kingdom crime gets their based on the kingdom. Those who are punished by empire, can get whatever the empire orders.
Paddling is usually for more violent or egregious crimes. They're also for an repeat crimes. The empire automatically gives them out after 3 of the same crime, OR 3 crimes in the same year (yes, you can hit both at the same time), in which case, they give an automatic whack (or more). How each kingdom interprets this is as follows:
Sandrun: Committing 2 crimes in a year, OR committing 2 of the same crime ever, is an automatic 3 whacks.
Sunnyvilla: Committing 3 crimes in a year, or committing 3 of the same crime ever, is an automatic 3 whacks.
Wyrmhome: Empire rules, with a maximum of 1 whack. (This is the only country with a maximum).
Rosaberg: Empire Rules.
Glacialane: Empire Rules
Luxworth: Committing 3 crimes in a year, or committing 2 of the same crime ever, is an automatic whack.
Lavandar: Empire Rules
However, there is one other way paddlings occur, and that is not paying off empirical loans. Kingdoms will just steal your paycheck and garnish your wages.
However, there are other possibilities within the Empire.
Number 2: Exile
Exile usually occurs if someone commits a murder, or is simply highly addicted to crime. Exile has someone launched from a catapult over the empire's edge. They usually land in a wilds somewhere and are never heard from again.
Exiling is also down on an interkingdom basis, meaning someone may never join that kingdom again. The Exiling process may kill the victim.
Number 3: Jail
Sometimes you just need the stony lonesome. This is pretty standard for a couple of days as they get someone ready to serve their "actual" sentence. In some cases, jail is simply a rehabilitation center, as they only keep them in jail for a month. Criminals usually wear a loincloth, color depending on their other punishment that will be inflicted.
Number 4: Boiling
Sometimes you just need the watery lonesome.
Number 5: Fines
The empire needs money sometimes. Fines are usually based on how much something would cost, plus some additional based on damages. Wysdom doesn't charge based on daily rates, they have pretty flat fees.
Number 6: Community Service
This might accompany a fine, but is usually done whenever there is major damage caused by something. Community service might be done if someone commits a prank that ends up defacing a building, or a center. Or causing a wildfire. Usually, this is something that can't reasonably be paid off with via fine. So someone may end up losing their weekends up until they "work off their damage".
Number 7: Some or All of the Above
In some cases, punishments can be mixed. While rare for someone to get all six, that can and has happened before.
"What About the Kingdoms?"
Each kingdom may have different or additional punishments or alterations of punishments, but usually follow the empire's general lining. Rosaberg and Glacialane are both cultural hubs, therefore they are way stricter about monetary crimes. Wyrmhome and Sunnyvilla are tougher on crimes with violence, but laxer on crime in general. Luxworth and Sandrun are strict on crime in general.
